I was born and raised in Halifax, where I’ve spent much of my time developing a strong background in jazz, funk, R&B, and soul music. My passion for music and guitar led me to study music at Dalhousie’s Fountain School of Performing Arts with ECMA winning guitarist and composer Scott Macmillan, where I furthered my knowledge in guitar, particularly in jazz.
During my time at Dalhousie, I also played as part of the Dalhousie Jazz Ensemble, directed by Chris Mitchell where I learned more about jazz, playing in ensembles, musicianship skills, and performed with celebrated, award-winning jazz artists such as Hilario Duran, Ignacio Berroa, Michael Kaeshammer, and Regina Carter. I have a strong background in performance, and I love sharing music with students!
Though most of my work is in Jazz, Soul/Neo-Soul, R&B, Blues, and Funk, I love playing and teaching all styles of music, and I love working with students from different musical backgrounds with different musical interests, from the simplest pop songs all the way to the densest jazz tunes.
Whether you want to learn how to solo over complex John Coltrane songs, learn how to lay down a James Brown style funk groove, strum out three chords to your favourite pop songs, or rock out on one chord to a punk rock anthem, I’ll find out what teaching style, and approach to music works best for you, to help you to make the music you love!
